Strong quake jolts Japan: seismologists

A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck not far off southwestern Japan late on Thursday, seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck not far off southwestern Japan late on Thursday, seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake hit at a depth of 161 kilometres (100 miles), at 10:26 pm (1326 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. The quake's epicentre was 71 kilometres southwest of Kagoshima, Kyushu, but Japan Meteorological Agency did not issue a tsunami warning.
