Strong quake strikes Indonesia's Sumatra island

A strong 6.9-magnitude quake struck Indonesia's western Sumatra on Sunday, the country's geophysics agency said.

A strong 6.9-magnitude quake struck Indonesia's western Sumatra on Sunday, the country's geophysics agency said.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 2:38 pm (0738 GMT), was located 43 kilometres (29 miles) southeast of Siberut in western Sumatra.

It was measured at a depth of 32 kilometres.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
