The quake occurred at 3:06 am Jakarta time (2006 GMT, Tuesday), with the epicentre 210 km southwest of Tual town at a depth of 128 km, the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency said.
There was no risk of a tsunami, the agency said.
A tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on October 25 killed 448 people and left 56 missing on Indonesia's Mentawai islands.
