The bomber targeted an emergency response unit's offices. He scaled the rear wall and jumped into the compound, but police opened fire on him before he could reach the main building, according to senior police office Bin Yameen.

"He was a suicide attacker. He tried to enter into the station from the rear but guards opened fire on him and he blew himself up," Yameen told reporters.

One of the wouned policmen was in a serious condition, Yameen said.

The capital had been braced for attacks by militants since the army launched an offensive against Taliban fighters and their allies in northwest Pakistan in late April.

The army first moved against the militants when they entered the Buner valley 100 km (60 miles) north of the Islamabad before extending the offensive to include the Taliban stronghold in Swat last month.

Militants have responded with bomb and gun attacks in the eastern city of Lahore, and northwestern cities of Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan.

On Friday a suicide bomber killed around 40 people in an attack on a mosque in a remote village of Upper Dir, a district bordering Swat.
