National League for Democracy spokesman Nyan Win says the party will meet on Friday for a formal decision. He says "it is highly possible that we will register."

The NLD refused to register last year because a law required imprisoned members to be expelled. The refusal protected Suu Kyi who was under house arrest at the time.

The clause was scrapped by the nominally civilian government that took office after winning the November 2010 elections held by the junta.

If the NLD registers, it can contest still unscheduled by-elections that would be the first electoral test of its popularity in decades.
