The Thai parliament on Friday postponed until next week a vote on whether to return Samak Sundaravej as prime minister after lawmakers from the ruling coalition failed to show up.

"The meeting to vote for prime minister is adjourned to next Wednesday at 9:30 am," speaker Chai Chidchob said.

Only 161 of the lower house's 470 deputies attended the session, most of them from the opposition Democrat Party.

The ruling coalition did not attend amid strong dissent over re-nominating Samak, who was stripped of office by the Constitutional Court three days ago for hosting TV cooking shows.
