Police authorities in Nepal arrested 10 Tibetan refugees on Monday for staging anti-China protests on the 55th anniversary of the failed Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule.
“Five persons were arrested from outside the Chinese consular office in Kathmandu, four from Swayambhunath Stupa and one in Pokhara,” Nepal Police spokesperson Ganesh KC told HT.
Despite heavy police presence to curb such protests, two men and three women carrying Tibetan flags shouted anti-China slogans for nearly five minutes outside the consular office before they were arrested.
Fear of anti-China protests and self-immolation bids had forced authorities in Nepal to step up security in the nation’s capital and hundreds of policemen were deployed outside the Chinese embassy, consular office and places where majority of Tibetan refugees reside.
“Security was increased in comparison to routine days to prevent any untoward incident of protest from the Tibetan refugee community,” the police spokesperson said.
Fully armed policemen were also deployed on the roads and alleys leading to the embassy, consular office and Buddhist pilgrim sites in Kathmandu and a tab kept on movement of people and vehicles.
