Two US nationals were among the 228 passengers of a missing Air France flight that crashed en route from Brazil to France over the Atlantic ocean, State Department has said.

"State Department consular officials are in contact with the family members of the American victims and we stand ready to provide all appropriate assistance to them," State Department Deputy Spokesman, Robert Wood said in a statement.

Consular officers are available at airports in Rio de Janeiro and in Paris, he said.

President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Monday at Charles de Gaulle airport outside Paris that the prospects of finding any survivors are very slim.
