UN to honour Brazil president for battling hunger

Lula was chosen because he prioritised the fight against hunger in his two terms of presidency, the UN said.

The award will be given to Lula next week by WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran, who will see the progress of projects being run under the Brazilian government's "Fome Zero" (Zero Hunger) programme in Brasilia and other cities, Xinhua reported.

Sheeran praised the "active role" played by Lula's government in anti-hunger efforts in Brazil and other countries.
