Lance Corporal Delano Holmes, 21, claimed during a court martial at the Marines base at Camp Pendleton that he killed Mutather Jasem Muhammed Hassin in self-defense after the Iraqi soldier refused to put out a cigarette.

The Marine was said to have feared that the glow from the cigarette would reveal their position to insurgents.

Holmes was also convicted of making a false official statement. He faces a maximum of eight years in prison.
