US welcomes passage of agreement

Welcoming the approval of the India-specific safeguards agreement by the IAEA, the US says it is looking forward to discuss granting an exemption for New Delhi.

Welcoming the approval of the India-specific safeguards agreement by the IAEA, the United States on Friday said it is looking forward to discuss granting an exemption for New Delhi at the NSG this month.

"Indeed we welcome it (the passage of safeguards at the IAEA). We believe the Agreement to be consistent with the high standards used by the IAEA for safeguards," a White House official told PTI over phone.

"We also look forward to discussing the exception for India at the NSG (Nuclear Suppliers Group) this month," the official added.
