Former US vice president Dick Cheney congratulated President Barack Obama on the killing of al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden by US forces in Pakistan but warned that the "war goes on."

Former US vice president Dick Cheney congratulated President Barack Obama on the killing of al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden by US forces in Pakistan but warned that the "war goes on."

Cheney paid tribute to American forces and intelligence services for their "tireless work" in tracking down bin Laden since the September 11, 2001 attacks but also offered rare praise to opponent Obama.

"The death of Osama bin Laden at the hands of American forces is a victory for the US and a tremendous achievement for the military and intelligence professionals who carried out this important mission," he said.
