BULANDSHAHR/GHAZIABAD: The Uttar Pradesh police on Monday arrested Saleem Bawaria, the prime suspect in the July 29 Dostpur highway robbery and gang rape incident, and two of his accomplices.
The police had roped in nearly 180 specialised police officers to track Bawaria.
Inspector general (Meerut zone) Sujit Pandey confirmed the arrests and said Saleem was nabbed along with his accomplice Zuber and Sajid.
“We expect that with Saleem’s arrest, nearly 20-22 cases would be opened up. Saleem and his men were involved in a recent case in Dostpur,” the IG said.
Uttar Pradesh director general of police Javeed Ahmad tweeted, “Remaining 3 accused in Bulandshahr case arrested after week long chase across east India (sic).”
Police sources said most of the highway robbers travel on light vehicles to move to distant directions, but Saleem’s gang would board buses and trains to evade police patrols and checking on highways.
