A US citizen was allegedly gang-raped by a group of five men, including a tourist guide at a five star hotel in Connaught Place in March this year, the victim said in a complaint sent by email on Friday.
The police confirmed receiving the complaint. A senior officer said the complaint is being verified and the police are trying to contact the victim to get details and record her statement for further action.
In the complaint sent to the official email account of the commissioner of police, the woman has expressed her willingness to reach Delhi and record her statement in person.
Police sources said that the victim has mentioned in the complaint that the men were associated with a travel agency. The woman has claimed that the tourist guide entered her room along with four men on the pretext of discussing a route plan.
The officer said a preliminary investigation has been launched into the case and the police “are in touch with the hotel authorities” to inquire about the matter.
Traumatised by the incident, the woman went back to the US. Police sources say the woman did not approach the police while being in Delhi. She also did not tell her family about the incident back in the US and slipped into depression.
She mentioned in the email that she decided to sent her complaint after “suggestion by a friend, who is a lawyer”. Her friend suggested her approaching an NGO and forward the complaint to the police, police sources said.
The NGO told the victim that she should send her complaint directly to the police commissioner. The staff at commissioner’s office immediately forwarded the complaint to the Connaught Place police station for “verification and investigation”.
The police have also contacted the US embassy in Delhi and sought details of the woman and the purpose of her visit to Delhi.
Sources said teams have been constituted to pursue the case, one of which contacted the hotel authorities and the travel agency mentioned in the complaint. The police have questioned some staff members of the hotel and may interrogate some more in the coming days, sources added.
