The fashion season has officially hit the world! Runway action just concluded in New York, and here’s a quick glimpse at all that trended.

Fashion runways in London might be already on a roll, but we are still hungover on all that NYFW (New York Fashion Week) had on offer. The recently concluded fashion showcase, which kicked off on February 9, gave us a lot of fashion fodder and trend takeaways for fall/winter 2017. And, apart from all the sartorial inspiration, the inclusive runway encouraged social conversations and made more than just style noise.
Here are our top ten picks:

1. THE NEW-AGE POWERSUIT

The demarcation between womenswear and menswear gets blurrier by the day. Gender-fluidity on the runway has been trending for a few seasons now and New York was no exception. From structured and sharply cut to mono-toned layering for the fall, the powersuit made a big impact.

2. SHIFTING SHAPES

The shape clutter is being broken. For autumn, the silhouettes are anti-fit and anti-norm. The exaggerated shapes, large collars and hanging sleeves are on-trend, bringing back the statement ‘boyfriend jacket,’ oversized capes and size-easy toppers.

3. FUR FORWARD

From Jeremy Scott to Michael Kors — lush plume-encrusted and fur-forward overcoats, capes and capelets made a lot of runway noise. They also made for the perfect topper for a layered look.

4. LEATHER WEATHER

If fur refuses to budge from the winter style charts, so does leather. Leather leggings made their way on to the runway in New York, especially paired with minimal monochromatic looks. Cash into your pair for the next season, ladies.

5. ON THE HEELS OF QUIRK

Thigh-high boots might have been all over the fashion radar in 2016, but in New York, the statement heel got re-defined. While Marc Jacobs went for chunky platforms for his show, we saw ice-skating inspired heels at Thom Browne.

6. NECK UP IN STYLE

Turtlenecks saw a big revival last season, and for fall/winter 2017, the statement is stronger. Runways across New York saw many variations of the high-neck and it’s safe to stay that the style is here to stay.

7. INCLUSIVE RUNWAYS

Runways go way beyond just trends. The same was proved at NYFW with designers showcasing collections that included an element of social and political consciousness. While Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung had statement-making tees take over his ramp which also saw plus-size models, Australian designer and model Madeline Stuart, who suffers from Down’s Syndrome, debuted her collection at the fashion week.

8. THE INDIAN TOUCH

India also made its presence felt in New York. While Deepika Padukone made her way to the shows by Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors, Priyanka Chopra went on to cheer Marc Jacobs. We also spotted model Bhumika Arora sashaying down the runway like a boss in New York.

9. THE VELVET TOUCH

Your autumn will have the velvet sheen impact. Designers continued to champion luxe velvet sheen in their collections. From fall coats to jumpsuits — many gave a big shout out to the trend.

10. THE FRONT ROWERS

You can’t expect New York to not give us a big helping of celebrity front rows. From momma fashion Anna Wintour to singer Katy Perry and actors Diane Kruger and Blake Lively, Hollywood stars and industry biggies made their presence felt.
