An Indian Army soldier allegedly shot dead his pregnant wife on Monday in Bihar’s Saharsa district over suspicions that she was involved in an illicit relationship, police said on Wednesday.

Police said Shiv Nandan Yadav brought Kavita Devi for an ultrasound scan to Saharsa from his village Sukhasini in Kanaria police outpost area of Simri-Bakhtiarpur sub-division of the district.

While returning to the village in the evening, Yadav stopped near Ghoghsam and fired two bullets killing Devi on the spot, police added. They have a one-year-old daughter.

Police have lodged a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by Devi’s brother. He alleged that Yadav started demanding a dowry of Rs 5 lakh three years after he married his sister in 2007, which they were unable to pay.

Officiating superintendent of police SK Biswas said they have recovered two empty cartridges, a motorcycle and an ultrasound report from the spot.

“Raids are on to nab the absconding army jawan,” Biswas added.
