Amid a bitter power struggle in the ruling Samajwadi Party, chief minister Akhilesh Singh Yadav sparked off more speculation in political circles with a sudden visit to the Raj Bhawan on Wednesday.
Ahead of the visit to the Raj Bhawan, Akhilesh met party legislators and seniors to finalise details of his proposed ‘rath yatra’ from November 3.
The meeting with governor Ram Naik came shortly after the Samajwadi Party expelled minister of state for forests Pawan Pandey for slapping a close aide of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The announcement of the disciplinary action was made by state party chief Shivpal Singh Yadav, who is locked in a power tussle with his nephew, the chief minister.
Pandey is close to Akhilesh.
The CM’s sudden visit caught everyone by surprise. Raj Bhawan sources said Akhilesh briefed the Governor on the prevailing political situation in the state.
According to SP sources, the visit might have been in connection with the four vacancies in the ministry. The vacancies rose on Sunday after Akhilesh sacked his uncle Shivpal Yadav, Om Prakash Singh, Narad Rai and Sayeda Shadaab Fatima in a sudden move aggravating the party’s crisis.
Despite Mulayam and Shivpal maintaining that there is no fight in the family , the rifts have widened with Akhilesh digging in his heels.
In another indication that rapprochement is unlikely between Shivpal and Akhilesh, the former began vacating his official residence in Lucknow on Wednesday.
