Even as the Opposition stayed away from the proceedings demanding a loan waiver for farmers, Shiv Sena legislators ensured that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was cornered as they criticised the government on the same issue on Wednesday.
Sena’s aggressive stance comes a day after HT reported that the party legislators unhappy with the government for being treated like outsiders. They also sought permission from their higher-ups to strike against the government on the farmers issue and expose the BJP ministers.
“The farmer from Maharashtra, who was a king at one time, has become a beggar. During the Lok Sabha elections, even the Shiv Sena was in support of Narendra Modi elected (as the Prime Minister). The farmers helped get this government to power. The government needs to act fast. It is time some permanent solutions are drawn out to change the situation,” said Sena legislator Gulabrao Patil.
Patil raised the issue during a discussion initiated by the ruling party on the failed rains, resulting drought situation and apathy of the government.
Arjun Khotkar, another Sena legislator, slammed the government saying that none of the schemes they are implementing are reaching the farmers. “When we go the villages, we are constantly questioned about what the government is doing. We have to face them and have no answers,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sena legislator Subhash Sabne said the government cannot cite financial distress as a reason; they have to think of solutions to tackle the issues such as including smaller farmers under EGS or checking how states like Telangana are able to give soya bean seeds at a lower rate than Maharashtra.
