A Ludhiana-based girl student has alleged harassment during the medical counselling at Baba Farid University in Faridkot on Friday night.
In her complaint to the Punjab medical education and research director on Saturday, Komalpreet Kaur, who secured 2,625th rank in the Punjab Pre-Medical Entrance Test (PMET), said the principal of Dashmesh Institute of Research and Dental Sciences, Faridkot, Dr SPS Sodhi, confiscated her original academic certificates.“I was allotted a bachelor of dental surgery (BDS) seat in the college. I had not paid the fees and wanting to opt for the MBBS, I decided to surrender the seat, but the principal refused to return my original certificates of Classes 10-12 and humiliated me,”she has stated in the complaint. She had attached with it an order by the Punjab medical education and research director issued to all universities in Punjab, clearly stating that original certificates of students cannot be withheld.
“After I was mentally tortured and gave it in writing (that she will be debarred from BDS counselling conducted by the university this year), he (Dr Sodhi) said he will return my certificates on October 8, after the counselling gets over,”said Komalpreet, a former student of St Thomas School here.Talking to HT, Dr Sodhi said the action was taken “as per rules of counselling”. “We had allocated the BDS seat to the student on Friday, which was the last day of counselling. After getting the seat, she wanted to surrender it.
This is not possible,”he said. University vice-chancellor Dr Raj Bahadur, however, claimed no institute can withhold any certificate.
