Former Akali minister and two-time Sangrur legislator Ranjit Singh Balian passed away in an SAS Nagar hospital on Tuesday night, following an illness.
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday expressed grief over his demise. The CM said Balian had worked for the development of the region and strengthened the party at the grassroots level. “Despite his fragile health, he continued to work for people’s well-being till his last breath,” said Badal. Describing it an irreparable loss to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Sukhbir said: “Balian was a dedicated soldier of the party who always performed his duties diligently and took several people-friendly steps during his tenure as state minister for urban development and housing.”
He further said that in both his tenures as MLA, Balian had worked tirelessly for the uplift of all sections of society in his constituency. State finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa remembered the former minister as an able leader, an enthusiastic party worker, and a good human being. Information minister Bikram Singh Majithia, other members of the state cabinet, legislators, and senior Akali leaders also expressed grief over the death of Balian.
“Balian will be cremated in his hometown, Sangrur, on Thursday,” said one of his relatives here.
