A Class 10 student was raped and set afire by her jilted lover in Jamshedpur on Thursday after she repeatedly turned down his marriage proposal.

The girl suffered 30% burns and is recovering at a local hospital, while the accused, Mohan Lohar (24), has been remanded to judicial custody.

Police said Lohar is a ruffian who did odd jobs for a living. He stayed in a rented house along with another man in Bagunhatu locality of Jamshedpur. Around a year ago, when he first saw the girl, he fell in love with her, Lohar said.

While Lohar told the police that the two had an affair, the girl declined any affair with him and instead accused him of often accosting her here and there and proposing marriage.

On Thursday evening, when she was going for her tuition classes, Lohar kidnapped her and took her to an isolated place near Bagunnagar where he raped her thinking that it would compel her to marry him, police said. The incident occurred barely a kilometer from chief minister Raghubar Das’s house.

The girl alleged when she still did not agree to his marriage proposal, Lohar poured kerosene oil on her and set her on fire with the intent to kill her. On hearing her screams, passers-by rushed to her rescue, nabbed Lohar and informed the police.
