Second-seeded Nick Kyrgios of Australia defeated Inigo Cervantes of Spain 7-6 (4), 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Estoril Open on Wednesday.

The Australian, who celebrated his 21st birthday with the win and was presented with a birthday cake by the tournament’s ball girls, will meet Borna Coric of Croatia for a place in the semifinals of the clay-court tournament.

“There are 50 things I would rather be doing on my birthday,” Kyrgios said after his win.

Fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain beat Stephane Robert of France 6-3, 7-6 (3) to also advance to the quarterfinals.

The 47th-ranked Spaniard will next face France’s Benoit Paire, who rallied to beat Kyle Edmund of Britain 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 in the late match.

Sixth-seeded Coric made it to the quarterfinals by beating Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Eighth-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain eased past countryman Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-3 to reach the second round.

Verdasco acknowledged his victory just 48 hours earlier over Lucas Pouille in the Nastase Tiriac Trophy final in Bucharest, Romania had left him “a little tired from a week of tough matches.”
