They are scary and repulsive but just so awesome. Now we know why HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones’ White Walkers, among the scariest monsters on TV currently, look so believable. Because of prosthetics. The channel released a four-minute video on Monday, revealing the painstaking process the Walkers are put through to achieve, what many say, is the last word in all things prosthetics.
In the video, Barrie Gower, Game of Thrones’ prosthetic designer, walks you through the process of making moulds and makeup. Gower calls Game of Thrones “kind of like a bucket list” where he and his team get to design so many kinds of monster and beings in just one project.
Their team has painters, sculptors, hair dressers all of them nothing short of artists. Gower says that they have to make sure that the prosthetics are wearable and can stand wind, cold and the outside environment.
Gower said his most enjoyable moment on the show was towards the end of Hardhome (Epside 8, Seaon 5) where White Walkers attack Jon Snow and the Wildlings. ‘You couldn’t believe what you were seeing on film was what was right next to you. The feeling of achievement was incredible.’
