The city has seen a host of new galleries opening this year. The latest to join the list is Kalyan Chheda’s Art Gate Gallery in Churchgate. Chheda is better known as the owner of an iconic 36-year-old store (Satyam Collection) that specialises in greeting cards and, of late, even artefacts and handicraft. The new gallery is located above his store.

“As part of my greeting card business, many artists would meet me to sell their paintings. I’d give them some money and ask them to design cards or paintings to sell at my store,” says Chheda. “I’ve seen a lot of talented artists who have had to wait at least three years for a chance to exhibit at older galleries. I wanted to give them a strong platform, so this is a dream come true for me.”

Art Gate has six sections where an artist can display his or her works according to themes, or multiple artists can use the spaces individually. There’s also an audio-visual room where one can watch clips of the artist at work or video installations. “Eventually, we will expand the AV room to host workshops, seminars, talks and screenings of short films on art,” says Chheda.

The gallery’s inaugural group show is on display till December 8. Artists Gautam Patole and Daxa Khandwala have curated the exhibition.
