Train movement was hit in Bhopal division of West Central Railway after a major fire broke out at route relay interlocking (RRI) building early on Wednesday night, damaging signalling system at Itarsi railway station, which is one of the big railway junctions of the country.
According to railway officials, the movements of over 50 trains have been affected. Some of them have been partially cancelled; some of them cancelled and routes of many trains has been diverted, said officials.
"The fire broke out at RRI office at about 5.30 am. It is suspected that fire broke out due to short circuit. Though, a four members J-grade committee has been constituted to find out the actual reason behind the incident and also measure the loss," said public relation office of Bhopal rail division, IA Siddique.
He further said that few short distances trains have been cancelled while many long distances train have been diverted through other routes. He further said that efforts were on to restore the damaged service and it was expected that system would be restored by the late night, he said.
Following information about fire and collapse of train movement, senior railway officers including divisional railway manager of Bhopal, Alok Kumar and other senior railway officers from zonal office of west central railway, Jabalpur rushed the spot.
According to the official handouts of West Central railway, Jabalpur, railway has made arrangements of drinking waters, foods, special announcement centers at every railway stations of the division, especially where affected trains were halted or from where trains were being diverted.
The railway administration has also set up many counters to refund and cancel tickets of the passengers whose trains have been terminated.
Meanwhile, chaotic situation was scene at Bhopal railway station due to the diversion and cancellation of trains. The passengers were scene thronged at enquiry counter of the station.
Rajeev Kumar, who was travelling from Amritsar to Manmad, said that he was waiting for another train for past several house as the train he was travelling in through another route.
"When I reached here (Bhopal), I was informed that train has been diverted through another room. Now, I am waiting for another train. The railway officials informed me that I would get another train by the late night as the affected traffic would easy by the late night," he said.
Another passenger, Vikram Gupta, who was traveling to Shridi from Ludhiyana, said he would have to travel via another rout as he left his train at Bhopal railway station as it had been diverted.
However, the diversion of train proved to be useful for few passengers. Archana Yadav, a resident of Bhopal, got a train for Ujjain thanks to the diverted route of a Mumbai bound train.
"In noon, there is no train from here to Bhopal. As it was important to go to Ujjain, I just came here with a hope that I would get any weekly train. I am fortunate that a diverted train is now going via Ujjain," she told HT.
