Police said Suman, 38, hanged herself in her Sarovar Apartment flat in Professors' Colony in the afternoon. Swami, a former BJP MLA, who had gone to attend a funeral at the time, broke down the door with the help of neighbours after repeated knocking went without a response. He found Suman hanging from the ceiling fan. She was rushed to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Additional SP Santosh Singh Gour said forensic experts have inspected the place and preliminary probe confirms that Suman had committed suicide.

The couple, police said, got married in 1995 and have two children — Nitya, 11, and Neel, 5 — who were in another room at the time of incident.

The police said it was not clear what prompted Suman to end her life, though sources said she had been ill for sometime. The incident occurred between 12 noon and 2 pm.

Swami, who broke down, said there was no row between him and his wife. "In the morning we had usual conversation and then I went out to attend a funeral," he said.

A case has been registered and investigations are on.
