Act Two: Bollywood actresses get a second chance
They haven’t been hot property of late. Some were close to being written off. Yet, these actresses are getting second chances, with big projects lined up.Updated: Sep 04, 2013 19:31 IST
Shruti Haasan’s Bollywood debut, Luck (2009), bombed at the box office. Her next, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji (2011), also received a lukewarm response. She then travelled south, where she managed to get a few Tamil and Telugu hits under her belt. Now, veteran actor Kamal Haasan’s daughter seems to be back for a second stint in B-Town with two big films lined up — Welcome Back (opposite John Abraham) and Gabbar (with Akshay Kumar). Anees Bazmee, director of the sequel to the 2007 hit Welcome, says, “I’ve never chosen my actors based on whether they are ‘hot’ or ‘cold’. I have confidence in myself as a director-writer… Plus, Shruti is a terrific actor.”
Shruti isn’t the only one preparing for her second innings. Bipasha Basu, who hasn’t been terribly busy of late, is believed to be starring in Sajid Khan’s Humshakals, with Saif Ali Khan and Riteish Deshmukh. The makers, however, remain tight-lipped about the film’s cast. “We will announce the cast later this month,” says producer Vashu Bhagnani.
Nargis Fakhri, too, debuted with a hit (Rockstar; 2011), but critics and trade pundits agreed the success was due to Ranbir Kapoor’s presence, and not hers. And she didn’t have any project until Madras Cafe came along. Director Shoojit Sircar was, however, confident all along. “I can assure you, she will surprise everybody with the film,” Shoojit had said before the release.
Asin, too, has been away from the spotlight for a while. She was last seen in the dud Khiladi 786 (2012). But now, she’ll be seen opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Umesh Shukla’s Mere Apne. “Asin did a fantastic job in Ghajini (2008) and Ready (2011). Mere Apne is a performance-oriented film, and she has proved herself as
an actor,” says producer Bhushan Kumar.
Last year’s much-hyped debutante, Yami Gautam, too didn’t have a Hindi film in hand (reportedly, she is no longer a part of John’s Hamara Bajaj) until she bagged Prabhudheva’s yet-untitled next with Ajay Devgn. “I’m sure it’s a matter of two-three hits; she’ll also be a star. She was superb in Vicky Donor (2012),” says the director.
