Dilwale Vs Bajirao: It’s Rs 21cr for SRK, only Rs 12cr for Ranveer
The first round of the much talked about Dilwale Vs Bajirao Mastani clash on the box office on Friday has clearly gone in favour of Shah Rukh Khan’s come back film. Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale was off to a flying start on its opening day, collecting a whopping Rs 21 crore, according to a statement from the film’s producers, Red Chillies Entertainment. In comparison, for all the grandeur it came packed in, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, could only register a less-than-impressive start on day one, collecting a mere Rs 12 crore.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#BajiraoMastani Fri ? 12.80 cr [3050 screens]. India biz. Film growing rapidly with strong word of mouth and glowing reviews.”
Dissed by the critics, Shetty’s Dilwale is now the third biggest opener of 2015, after Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Rs 40.5 crore) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs 27.25 crore).
Bhansali’s magnum opus struggled in the international markets as well on its opening day. Adarsh wrote on Twitter, “#Dilwale takes international markets by STORM... UK: Fri [Rank 2, after #StarWars] £ 218,803 [? 2.22 cr]. AWESOME! #Dilwale - AUSTRALIA: Fri [Rank 6] A$ 143,352 [? 69.33 lacs]... NEW ZEALAND: Fri [Rank 3] NZ$ 79,292 [? 35.39 lacs]. TERRIFIC! #BajiraoMastani gets affected by #Dilwale wave in some intl markets... UK: Fri [Rank 7] £ 74,029 [? 73.13 lacs]. Some sites to report.#BajiraoMastani - AUS: Thu A$ 67, Fri [Rank 10] A$ 77,919. Total: A$ 77,986 [? 37.11 lacs]... NZ: Fri [Rank 7] NZ$ 15,428 [? 6.89 lacs].”
Bajirao Mastani is a historical romance saga that narrates the love story of the Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I and his second wife Mastani. While Ranveer and Deepika play the eponymous roles, Priyanka is seen playing Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai.
Dilwale reunites the iconic pair of Shah Rukh-Kajol after five years and is a commercial potboiler with a dose of romance, comedy and action.
