Kaabil Vs Raaes and more: Watch out for these battles on the BO in 2017

Not just Kaabil and Raaes, a number of other big-ticket films are also slated to clash at the box office next year.

Two films releasing on the same day is never a good idea, but come 2017, and Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kaabil and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raaes are all set to clash on the Republic Day weekend.

Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Haseena is slated to clash with Saif Ali Khan’s Chef.

Several other big-ticket films are also slated to face each other at the ticket counters. While May 12 will see the release of Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra-starrer Meri Pyaari Bindu and Ajay Devgn’s Baadshaho, July 14 will see Saif Ali Khan-starrer Chef and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Haseena, hitting theatres at the same time.

A BAD MOVE

Film-maker Sanjay Gupta, who has directed Kaabil, says he is not happy with the conflicting dates. “I am very saddened by the slated clash. Our industry should function like a family. If a movie doesn’t do well, it doesn’t just affect the makers. The hundreds of people associated with it are hurt as well. Such clashes always defy logic,” he says.

Experts also insist that a clash “is never good”. “If there are two big budget or big-ticket films releasing on the same day, audiences get divided. While the degree of effect might vary, ultimately, both films have to suffer,” says trade expert Amod Mehra.

NOT MANY FRIDAYS

While last year saw Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani and Shah Rukh’s Dilwale releasing on the same day, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil locked horns with Shivaay last month.

In an interview earlier, SRK told HT Café, “There’s a simple logic — there are 300 films and 52 Fridays [in a year]. There are going to be [almost] six films releasing on the same day. Sometimes, it happens to be mine. The idea is to do our best and wish the other person also the very best.”

Other movies set up for conflicting releases include Imtiaz Ali’s next (starring Shah Rukh and Anushka Sharma) and Akshay Kumar-starrer Crack; Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again, starring Ajay and Rajinikanth-Akshay-starrer 2.0; as well as Aanand L Rai’s next (starring SRK) and Hrithik’s Krrish 4.

“It’s a very simple logic that it’s never a good idea to have two films clash, but there are only so many Fridays in a year,” adds Mehra.
