For Mother’s Day, how about a round-up of some onscreen moms who redefined the stereotypical portrayal of mothers? These characters you saw in some recent films weren’t just relatable, but they left a mark on viewers’ minds with their strong screen presence, and just about all those motherly qualities that you know your mom has, too. Sakshi Tanwar

One of the highest grossing films of 2016 was Aamir Khan starrer Dangal and it was a surprise for the viewer to see small screen baahu, Sakshi Tanwar play the big screen mother. In one of the interviews, Aamir confessed that it was his mother who used to watch TV serials and thus suggested Sakshi’s name for the role, when the filmmakers were in the process of casting.

Ratna Pathak Shah

A seasoned stage, TV and film actor Ratna Pathak Shah was, as usual, praised by the viewers. Her previous character portrayal of the cool and the fussy mother in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (2008) and Khoobsurat (2014) was also noticed. But when she became that ‘typical’ mommy to two grown up sons - enacted by Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra - in Kapoor & Sons, she stole some major appreciation!

The versatile 29-year-old Swara Bhaskar, who took up the role of a single mother to a a 15-year-old in Nil Battey Sannata (2016), pulled off the role quite convincingly!

Beyond the fun, madness and determination, there were some on-screen mothers who showcased how moms are the pillars of the family. Ace artist Shabana Azmi’s act as Sonam Kapoor’s mother in the National Award-winning film Neerja (2016) was riveting. If you haven’t heard Azmi’s concluding speech in the film, then you have certainly missed something!
