Raazi box office day 1: Alia Bhatt delivers another winner, film earns Rs 7.53 cr
Raazi box office collection on the opening day was Rs 7.53 crore, a massive number for what Bollywood calls a ‘female-centric’ film. Raazi has Alia Bhatt in the lead.Updated: May 12, 2018, 12:37 IST
In principle, Raazi is a risky project. In these deeply polarized times in India, here is a Kashmiri Muslim girl who agrees to marry a Pakistani army officer so that she can spy for India during the 1971 war between the two neighbours. And then, it is what Bollywood likes t call female-centric cinema. Perhaps, that is what makes Raazi’s box office success so much more spectacular.
The film starring Alia Bhatt as Sehmat has earned Rs 7.53 crore on its opening day and the trade believes, correctly, that this is just the beginning. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared on Twitter, “Power of SOLID CONTENT... #Raazi starts Day 1 with a BIG BANG... The EXCEPTIONAL word of mouth should result in a FANTASTIC opening weekend... Fri ₹ 7.53 cr. India biz.”
The film is now looking at a solid weekend and the numbers are expected to climb up in the coming days.
The film is based on author Harinder Sikka’s book titled Calling Sehmat, a true account of a woman who went deep cover during the war. Director Meghna Gulzar confessed while speaking with HT that Alia was always her first choice for the role.
Alia herself said the role shocked her. “I couldn’t believe that this actually happened with a 20-year old girl, who gave up her life and everything, and became a spy for India in Pakistan. Also, I have closely followed Meghna’s work, and after Talvar, she went on top of the list of people I want to work with,” she said.
Raazi also stars Vicky Kaushal, Rajit Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat and Soni Razdan.
