India is all set to relive the magical moment when cricket’s David trumped the Goliath, the West Indies, and brought the Cricket World Cup trophy home. Director Kabir Khan will present the story of skipper Kapil Dev (to be played by the flamboyant Ranveer Singh) and the Indian national cricke team when they left a whole country energised after winning the 1983 World Cup. The film, obviously, is called ‘83.
When Ranveer, who was present at the launch of ’83, was asked about his reaction on being offered the role of Kapil Dev, he noted, “I was born at the time when cricket was big time. When Kabir Sahab (director Kabir Khan) had come to me and said that there will be a film on 83, I was like finally. And when he was narrating it to me, I was like woooh. It is not a story just about cricket but a human story.”
The actor also shared that he was quite nervous when he was asked to do this role and questioned himself that how is he going to do this. “How am I going to do this? I am honoured that I will be a part of the biggest story. Goosebumps and goosebumps in the second part of the film, right Kabir sir?” added Ranveer.
I feel honoured and privileged to be part of this film. One of the greatest underdog stories of all time - finally coming to the silver screen. What a day it's been. To have met our sporting heroes in the flesh and be regaled by their stories - full of nostalgia, humour, emotion...a truly unforgettable event. Im filled with a sense of responsibility and committed to making a film that the entire nation can be proud of. The greatest Indian sports story will now get its deserved cinematic glory! It's time to #Relive83 🏏may God bless our endeavour. Thank you for this once in a lifetime opportunity @kabirkhankk ... lets do this !!!
Kapil Dev, who was also present at the event, said that it will not be an easy task to make the 1983 squad. “It was not easy to handle the squad of 1983. Try, but you’ll find it difficult to get such characters across India,” Dev added.
Also present at the launch were legendary cricketers like Mohinder Amarnath, Kirti Azad, Roger Binny, SS Madanlal, Sandeep Patil, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Yashpal Sharma, Dilip Vengsarkar and Sunil Valson.
The 1983 World Cup has been a celebratory milestone in the history of the Indian cricket. The film will be shot at real locations and will be going on floors early next year.
Helmed by Kabir Khan, the Bajirao Mastani star will play the lead. The casting of the other cricket players is yet in process. Kabir has already scripted the film. The director said, “As a young schoolboy when I watched India win the 1983 Cricket World Cup I had no idea that from that day onwards Cricket in India will change forever. As a filmmaker, for me, the journey to that win, filled with raw energy and sheer passion of that young Indian team, is probably one of the most exciting stories I have worked on. And it’s great to have Ranveer come on board to play Kapil Dev, as honestly, I could see no one else for the role, ever since I started finalising the script.”
