Suchitra Krishnamoorthi on sister Sujata Kumar’s death: Never imagined life without her

Actor and singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, younger sister of late actor Sujata Kumar, opens up about her sister who was more like a mother to her and what life without her would be like.

Singer and actor Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, younger sister of actor Sujata Kumar, has spoken about her bond with her sister, saying that the latter raised her and was her best friend.

Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Suchitra gave us a peek into the woman Sujata was. Suchitra mentions how she was a compassionate soul who was always there for those who needed her and how she “touched many lives with her vivacity and generosity”.

Sujata Kumar was like a mother-figure in Suchitra Krishnamoorthi’s life.

In one of her tweets from the hospital while Sujata was still fighting for her life, Suchitra mentioned how Sujata was like a mother and best friend to her. In her Mumbai Mirror interview, she explained further on the bond their shared. “My sister practically raised me and was my best friend. She loved unconditionally and gave so much to everyone in her orbit that she would often run out of energy herself. But I never imagined that she would one day no longer be a part of my life; its unbearable to even think about.”

Suchitra said in all these years she had taken her sister’s goodness for granted. Sujata would often tell her, “Be bindaas” and that’s the motto she would like to follow. However, she would miss Sujata’s “quiet wisdom as much as her raucous laughter.”

She spoke in glowing terms about her sister’s quite courage; of how she spirituality and her “tenacity of an unrelenting warrior”. She also said mentioned how Sujata was an emancipated woman even before people understood the meaning of the terms women’s liberation.

Sujata died on August 19 after battling cancer for many years. In one of her last speeches that has surfaced now, she can be seen speaking on emotional abuse, her divorce and of course, battling cancer. Her honesty and her courage shines through as she speaks.

Sujata had been an actor for quite some time, however, it was after Gauri Shinde cast her as Sridevi’s caring elder sister in English Vinglish that she became a well known face. She later featured in Anil Kapoor’s TV serial 24 in which she played Meghna Singhania.
