This important book chronicles and analyses the salient features of the impact of transnational media on the television and advertising industries in three regions—South Asia, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia.

Amos Owen Thomas identifies and classifies the major players—commercial and public broadcasters, satellite and cable television companies, and programme producers—and their corporate ownership links. This discussion is placed in the context of globalisation—its antecedents, causes and dynamics.

The author introduces a novel six-fold typology by which to analyse government policies towards transnational satellite television, as well as the shifts that have occurred over the decade 1991-2001.

Through case studies from the Indian subcontinent, Greater China and the Malay Archipelago, he provides a systematic analysis of the diffusion of transnational television across Asia, as well as the concurrent development of domestic commercial television in each region and the nature of the relationship between both sets of broadcasters.
