Tough but not infeasible
Times are tough and when businesses (above all, E-businesses) are sinking at titanic speeds, one would consider setting up an E-commerce business a literally suicidal venture. But Jason Rich, who has written the book in the thick of things, doesn't seem to think so. Rich gives comprehensive statistics about the scope of online businesses, so good, that you almost begin to shed doubts about the drooping Internet economy - when you haven't even leafed through the first page. Take a look: "Service industries will be shaken up by the Internet, as $220 billion in sales move on-line by year 2003" (Internet Computing); "Online penetration will slow by 2001 but will still reach 56% of US households by 2003" (Forrester Research); "By 2002, annual E-commerce revenues will
top $1 trillion" (Intel)…and so on.
Figures change quickly in today's industry, but the ones mentioned above are enough to make an entrepreneur want to seriously start considering business opportunities in the E-commerce world.
In this industry which is changing extremely quickly, the book is not focussed on providing a set of rules and guaranteed methods for achieving online success. Rather, you get important answers to important questions (not necessarily in a Q&A format). Take for example:
Q. What is the quickest way to sell online advertising space to other online businesses?
A. Make sure the businesses you target are interested in your niche market...For quick access, go to Ad-Guide (ad-guide.com) - a Web site directory and search engine devoted to advertising and marketing services and resources...
Another Q. There are so many new Web technologies available, such as streaming audio, video. Which of these technologies should a start-up online business consider incorporating into the site?
A. Cater your new Website to the lowest common denominator of users…most people do not have the required Web browser plug-ins or technology to accept streaming audio or video…Don't develop a site where the download times are too significant to keep the visitor's attention…A 30-second waiting time for a page to download is too long for most sites.
Must-buy? A Wall Street Journal bestseller, the book, needless to say, is a must-buy for those looking to make a mark in the Internet economy.
