8 ways to marvel in the hottest hue of the season: Metallics!
Here’s how you can reflect and sport metallic colours in a chic wayUpdated: Aug 18, 2018 22:11 IST
Metallics means gaudy, metallic means extra… Not any more! Metallic colours are loved but misunderstood, says designer Amit Aggarwal, who presented an array of them in his collection at India Couture Week last month. What metallic colours also do is they make you look slimmer!
“The beauty of metallic is that it has no edge, that’s why the silhouette makes you look thinner,” says Aggarwal. “Metallic colours reflect light, regular ones don’t. Just pick the hue according to your skin tone. That’s the only thing you need to think of to rock this trend!”
1. Power of luxe – A trench coat with sheen (For her)
Pair this with: “An ensemble that lets the metallic stand out. You can also make a statement in full metallic! Just stick to the same undertones,” says celebrity stylist Rishi Raj.
Avoid: “Teaming it with anything plastic-looking or shiny, or any handwoven metallic textile,” he cautions.
Wear it to: “A day event or an evening out,” he says.
Style it with: “Accessories made with wood or bone, and flat footwear,” he suggests.
Make-up essentials: “Eyeliners in pop hues, like metallic green, glossy lips work best,” says celebrity make-up artist Rashmi Shastri.
2. Slouchy chic – Metallic finish quilted upperwear and shiny shoes (For him)
Pair them with: “A hint of matte metallics or handwoven matte textures to play down the ‘showy’ part,” suggests Rishi.
Avoid: “Metal accessories,” he says.
Wear them to: “A sangeet or a reception party,” he says.
Style them with: “A watch with a wood-finish strap or eyewear in similar frames,” adds Rishi.
Make-up essentials: “An ash-grey wax to set the hair,” recommends Rashmi.
3. Wedding shenanigans – A bronze waistcoat offset by a long jacket with shine + a bag that shimmers
Pair them with: “Metallics are a statement look. So, if you’re going for metallic on metallic, pick a neutral hue for a chic look,” says fashion designer Resham Karmchandani of The Pot Plant.
Avoid: “Going overboard with mixing colours. Also, don’t add any shimmer,” she says.
Wear them to: “Wedding functions like sangeet or mehendi,” she says.
Style them with: “Contemporary accessories and classic, plain shoes,” she suggests.
Make-up essentials: “A liquid eyeshadow and some highlighter on the cheekbone and collarbone,” says celebrity make-up artist Aakriti Kochar.
4. Go Indie –A lustrous draped sari
Pair this with: “A simple and preferably sleeveless blouse to let the focus be on the sari,” says Rishi.
Avoid: “Anything that adds bulk, as this fabric is not clingy,” he says.
Wear it to: “A reading session, art exhibition or a sit-down ceremony,” he suggests.
Style it with: “A waist-cinching leather belt leather,” he says.
Make-up essentials: “A hint of rose gold shimmer in the center of the eye with the base as a smokey eyeshadow. For tan skin tones, use copper instead of the rose gold,” adds Aakriti.
5. Girls night out – A glossy pink wired dress
Pair this with: “A colour-on-colour or a subtle accent to not take away from the vibe of the pink dress,” says fashion designer Sanya Suri.
Avoid: “Too many colours, especially contrasting ones with the outfit,” she says.
Wear it to: “A bridal shower or a night out with your friends,” suggests Sanya.
Style it with: “Statement earrings and minimalistic footwear,” she says.
Make-up essentials: “Paint your pout pink with a metallic shimmer at the center of the lips. Keep the face dewy and swipe a thin stroke of eyeliner,” says Aakriti.
6. Shine on – Crinkled glossy pants and a darker jacket (for him)
Pair them with: “The lowers in this look team well with a graphic black tee or a black sweatshirt,” says designer Nachiket Barve.
Avoid: “Wearing an all-metallic ensemble if you are curvy. If you are top-heavy wear the metallic element as bottoms, and vice versa,” he adds.
Wear them to: “Anywhere but a job interview!” says Nachiket.
Style them with: “White keds or brogues,” he suggests.
Make-up essentials: “A basic highlighter is enough to bring on a little shine,” suggests Rashmi Shastri.
7. Such a sport! – A glam bomber with matching pants (for her)
Pair them with: “Shredded white jeans or culottes along with the bomber jacket for an athleisure look,” suggests Nachiket.
Avoid: “Overdoing! No loud make-up during the day for sure,” he says.
Wear them to: “A lunch with friends or a casual cocktail evening,” he suggests.
Style them with: “Nude wedges and a statement neckpiece,” he says.
Make-up essentials: “A brown metallic lipstick to go with the bronze outfit,” says Rashmi.
8. Disco dress – A super silver A-line dress with a thick leather belt
Pair it with: “This outfit is complete by itself, so you can pair it with oversized black spectacles,” says fashion designer Pallavi Mohan.

Wear it to: “A fun party or pub!”she says.
Style it with: “Statement earrings would be all you need to accessorise!” says Pallavi.
Make-up essentials: “You can safely go OTT with this look with silver eyeshadow,” says Rashmi.
