MUMBAI: State Bank of India tops the list of wilful defaulters, with 1,034 accounts amounting to ₹12,090 crore, from a total of 5,610 accounts totaling ₹58,792 crore across the banking sector. Punjab National Bank follows with 698 accounts and ₹9,445 crore), Central Bank of India (639 accounts with ₹3,574 crore), Oriental Bank of Commerce (339 accounts with ₹3,545 crore) and Union Bank of India (611 accounts with ₹2,990 crore) make up the top five, with rest of the government banks dividing 3,192 accounts and ₹28,775 crore. The data was shared by the bank staff union All India Banks Employees’ Association. The list also names all wilful defaulters, including Kingfisher Airlines, Deccan Chronicle Holdings, Zoom Developers and Winsome Diamonds, among others. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had told the Rajya Sabha recently that there were 8,167 wilful defaulters who owe banks ₹76,685 crore, with 1,724 FIRs filed till 2015-16.
