Tata Motors' aborted plant in the West Bengal village has cascaded to other companies including Tata Steel, and the process of land acquisition has become really difficult, Tata Steel managing director HM Nerurkar said.
Nerurkar said Tata Steel is grappling with land acquisition problems at various places, and is unable to convince people that a factory will change their lives.
He said vested political interests were causing detriment to the society. Tata Steel's proposed 10 million-tonne integrated steel plant in Gopalpur is facing difficulties, he said. “Only 20 kms away (where Tata Steel's ferro chrome plant is located), they can see how the living standards of the people have changed, but a few people are refusing to part with their land,” he disclosed.
He said greenfield projects in various parts of the country have not taken off mainly because of the land acquisition hurdle.
