The Nikkei share average fell 0.95 per cent on Friday as exporters such as Sony Corp fell after the yen jumped against the dollar and euro after data showed Japan's core consumer prices fell at a slower pace in April as expected.

Japanese core consumer prices fell 0.1 per cent in April from a year earlier, government data showed before the open, matching economists' consensus forecast.

The Nikkei was down 167.70 points at 17,529.27 as of 0001 GMT. The broader TOPIX index lost 0.95 percent to 1,721.62.
