Forex dealers said besides dollar's gains against other Asian currencies, increased demand for the American currency from importers also put pressure on the local unit but a higher opening in equities capped the losses.

The rupee had ended 31 paise lower at 51.78/79 against the dollar in the previous session on strong dollar demand from importers.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex rose by 53.18 points, or 0.31%, at 17,445.57 in early trade.
