At 9:01 am, the 30-share BSE index was down 1.69 per cent at 16,707.10 points, all of its components declining.
Reliance Communications, India's No 2 mobile phone operator, was down 2.4 per cent at 141.10 rupees even after reporting a smaller-than-expected 16 per cent fall in quarterly profit over the weekend.
The 50-share NSE Index, Nifty, was down 1.7 per cent at 5,008.20.
