US stocks opened lower on Monday as investors booked profits from shares that have helped propel equities to records, while another sharp fall in Chinese stocks fueled some concerns, tempering optimism from another wave of takeovers.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 32.75 points, or 0.24 per cent, at 13,635.36. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 2.96 points, or 0.19 per cent, at 1,533.38. The Nasdaq composite index was down 5.39 points, or 0.21 per cent, at 2,608.53.
