Volkswagen Tayron R-Line production commences in India, will launch in Q1 of 2026

Volkswagen has started local assembly of the Tayron SUV in India, set to be the brand's flagship model.

Volkswagen has announced that it has commenced the local assembly of the Tayron SUV in India. It will be the new flagship SUV for the brand that will be brought to India in R-Line trim. Tayron R-Line is being assembled at the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Plant in Maharashtra, and the launch is scheduled to happen in the first quarter of 2026.

Volkswagen Tayron R-Line is expected to be offered in just one variant.

The Volkswagen Tayron can best be described as a more spacious, three-row interpretation of the Tiguan, aimed at buyers looking for added practicality. The SUV has already been spotted multiple times on Indian roads, and interestingly, these test mules were seen without any camouflage, hinting that the model is nearing its debut.

Globally, the Tayron sits below the Touareg in Volkswagen’s SUV lineup. For India, the model is expected to arrive as a CKD, or Completely Knocked Down unit. Being CKD instead of CBU should help the brand keep pricing competitive in the premium SUV segment.

In terms of design, the Tayron shares several visual cues with the Tiguan R-Line, giving it a sporty and contemporary appearance. However, it is significantly longer, with an increase of 231 mm in overall length to accommodate a more spacious cabin and a third row of seating. At the front, the SUV features sleek LED headlamps paired with a darkened grille and a mesh-pattern air dam that adds to its aggressive stance.

Internationally, the Tayron is offered with advanced IQ.LIGHT HD Matrix headlights with Dynamic Light Assist, featuring 19,000 individually controlled LEDs in each unit. Whether this high-end lighting technology will be offered in India remains unclear. The standard LED headlights are connected by a slim LED light bar, which also highlights an illuminated Volkswagen logo at the centre in white. Final details on the India-spec feature list will only be confirmed closer to launch.

The test vehicle spotted in India was riding on 19-inch alloy wheels and featured a rear bumper similar to the five-seat version. However, the rear lighting design appears slightly different. The Volkswagen badge at the rear is illuminated in red, aligning with the taillamp design and giving the SUV a distinct night-time signature.

Under the hood, the Volkswagen Tayron is expected to use the familiar 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine already seen in models like the latest Skoda Kodiaq and Tiguan R-Line. This motor delivers 200 bhp and 320 Nm of torque and is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Once launched, the Tayron will enter a highly competitive segment, taking on established rivals such as the Skoda Kodiaq, Citroen C5 Aircross, Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, and Jeep Meridian.
