Two days prior to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal's road show in Ludhiana, the party has accelerated its election campaign in Ludhiana.
Having remained in headlines for levelling “strong allegations” against senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders for their involvement in drug peddling, Punjab jails director general of police (DGP) Shashikant has once again taken the ruling SAD-BJP alliance head on as an enthused member of AAP.
The DGP, along with other party volunteers, were extended a warm welcome by the residents, before being showered with questions on Kejriwal.
Reflecting that the recent incident of slapping had added to Kejriwal's popularity, majority of residents condemned the incident during the party's campaigning.
Col JS Gill (retd), the spokesperson of AAP, while issuing a statement on behalf of the state unit of the party, said, “Slap on Kejriwal's face will resonate in the results of elections.
Such attempts hint at the frustration of established parties and now the time has come when the people of the country will give an answer.”
“AAP has ushered in a new era in Indian politics and the party has declared a war against SAD in Punjab which the party volunteers are confident of winning with the help of common people, who want to bring this despotic rule to an end,” said DGP Shashikant, as he campaigned in various parts of the city in favour of AAP candidate from Ludhiana HS Phoolka.
After reaching out to the rural parts of the constituency, Shashikant and other party members have initiated persuasive canvassing, which includes deliberations with intelligentsia and closed-door meetings with traders and businessmen.
Having identified the posh localities that have low percentage of voters, DGP Shashikant led a special contingent, which included Col JS Gill (retd), Gurminder Singh Kang, Brig TS Thind (retd), Capt Satbir Singh (retd), Narinder Kaur and Savita Kalra, to motivate the electorate to cast their precious votes.
“We are for justice and strictly against gundagardi (hooliganism). AAP will put an end to the mafias working in property, sand, cable, hospitality, transport and various other businesses.
Also we will take up the cause of securing the rights and liberties of the NRIs,” said Shashikant during his visit to an area on Pakhowal Road.
Wearing caps and ribbons carrying slogans and symbols of AAP, the volunteers walked down the roads asking for support and votes for their candidate.
Pragti, a bank official, while reciprocating to the visit of AAP, said the party had plans to take up state-specific agenda against drugs, civic/human rights, farmers' woes, restoration of rights of students and women, which had given hope to larger sections of society. We all are looking forward to a positive change through AAP.”
