Chandigarh: Man gets 5-year jail for abetment to suicide

A local court on Wednesday awarded five-year jail to a man held guilty for abetment to suicide by his wife. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict identified as Gurpal Singh, a resident of Derabassi.

Gurpal's wife Rani Devi had committed suicide in October last year, following which, her father Mahinderpal Singh, a Chandimandir resident, had alleged that the accused used to trouble her over dowry.

He said on October 11, 2014, he was informed that his daughter was unwell and when he reached hospital, the doctors informed him that his daughter was dead. She had consumed poison.
