The body of victim Gurpreet was fished out on Thursday morning after rescue work by Delhi Police and fire service. The NHRC observed that if the media reports were true, the child's human rights were violated seriously and, so it issued a notice to the South Delhi municipal commissioner to demand a report in two weeks.

Gurpreet and his grandmother had returned from Punjab and reached their home by a rickshaw. While the grandmother was busy paying the fare, Gurpreet broke free and ran towards the house in excitement.

There was no electricity in the area at that time, so the child failed to spot the open manhole.
