The Delhi transport department has sought permission from the Election Commission to make helmet mandatory for women pillion riders in the city. "Sikh tenets forbid the wearing of any cap. Baptised Sikh women who wear turban cannot wear helmet over it," DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK wrote to lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung.

He cited resentment among Sikh women and demanded a review of the order to respect their religious sentiments. "However, Sikh women by own choice are free to wear helmet," wrote GK. Jung has given his approval to the strict helmet rule for women.
