Members of Mohali Industries Association (MIA) on Tuesday held a protest over the recent power regulatory measures imposed by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) in view of insufficient rains during this monsoon.
Members of Members of Mohali Industries Association said the state government, despite knowing that there would be inadequate rains in this monsoon, failed to take required measures to ensure sufficient power supply to the industry.
Daily twelve-hour power cuts (from 8pm to 8am next day) have been announced across the industry. The members raised slogans against government outside MIA Bhawan in Phase 7, Industrial Area of SAS Nagar.
Gurkirpal Singh, president of Members of Mohali Industries Association, said, “Power tariff in Punjab is among the highest in the country. Two years back, the state gover nment had increased the tariff by 8-10% and it was assured to the industry that once the private power companies start production, the tariff will be reduced.”
Gagan Chhabra, general secretary, Members of Mohali Industries Association, said: “It seems that the private power companies, in spite of becoming operational, have not made any difference to bridge the gap between demand and supply. The industry is suffering huge losses because the we are not being allowed to operate for 12 hours on a daily basis.”
Vijay Kumar Chawla, chairman, Power and Energy Matters Committee, said: “We were looking forward to a pleasant summer with adequate power supply but due to gross mismanagement of the power ministry and the state government, we are facing a harrowing situation. The government should take immediate steps to make provision for power to the industry.”
