Chowkidars serving in 3,243 panchayats of the state, alleging biased and discriminating attitude of the government in regularising them, decided to go on statewide protest on October 13.
After concluding the Himachal Pradesh Chowkidar Union (HPCU) state executive meeting which was attended by 10 districts chiefs here, state president of the union Kuldeep Singh and state legal advisor Bhagat Singh Verma alleged that the state government had decided to recruit "mobilisers in panchayats", while chowkidars who were serving key jobs in primary institute of the society were not considered for regularisation.
They said the state government had framed a policy according to which panchayat secretaries were regularised while chowkidars were still getting with `1,950 per month.
Kuldeep and Bhagat alleged that neither the department nor the state government was ready to accept them as their employees. They said chief minister Virbhadra Singh had assured chowkidars during his previous regime that their services would be regularised in 2007, but to no avail.
