At a meeting held in Mohali on Sunday, PUTIA condemned the government's decision to levy taxes on educational institutes, a PUTIA spokesman here stated.

"Various commercial charges, including change of land use (CLU), external development charges (EDC), commercial electricity charges, commercial transport charges and stamp duty have immensely burdened these institutes," Dr Anshu Kataria of the Aryans Group said at the meeting.

Doaba Group of Colleges' chairman Manjit Singh said there was 95% contribution of private institutions in providing technical education and in a way, these institutions were creating employment opportunities and playing a vital role in the country's development.

Several other issues pending with the state government, Punjab Technical University, and All India Council for Technical Education were also discussed at the meeting.
